Massie Creek | for solo piano

Andy McFarlane

Massies Creek is a stream that flows from my hometown in central Ohio. This enduring stream babbles across flat fields of corn and soybeans, shouts beneath bridges and trees, and pays tribute through its gaping mouth to stronger currents: the Little Miami, the Ohio, and the Mississippi Rivers, and ultimately the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean.

My home for almost the entirety of my thirty years has been near this series of streams at different locations, gradually moving downstream. While each season allows its own joys, the creek provides a special rejuvenation through the summer , a cooling break from exhausting daily work and play , and a peaceful song throughout stargazing nights. During my high school years, I would follow the small stream from our apple orchard to where it met the Massies and stand on the bridge above the quiet ripples, knowing the water's journey would explode into much more complex rapids.
